Do you agree with Jane Fonda’s favorite exercise motto, “no pain, no gain?” Is it impossible to attain greatness without considerable hardship?

It’s always seemed to me that the best opportunities I’ve had in life are the ones for which I’ve fought the hardest. Academic success, for example, doesn’t require literal blood, sweat and tears to achieve, but an entirely different ‘pain’; a dedicated work ethic and hours upon hours of hard work. Fonda’s not wrong; the harder you work, the greater your gain at the end of it. 

This summer I decided to finally do the work required to actually become more fit and healthy so resigned myself to a half an hour jog once a day. It doesn’t sound like much but boy did my body feel it at the end of the day. Stiff calf muscles which meant I couldn’t sleep comfortably at night, a strained ankle after pushing myself too hard, but it worked. I have no idea whether it was a placebo effect or not, but my mind felt clearer and I had more energy during the day. I felt healthier and happier with myself, so really what are a few aching joints and muscles compared to that? 

Effectively, “no pain, no gain” can be better translated into “work hard to achieve good results”, and although it’s predominantly used in relation to sport, it can easily applied to other life challenges such as school and work.

Eesh this makes me need to go and be productive.
